Suggestions for improving MarketSmith
by bigdogcole (640) Joined on 06/17/2010 Posts: 20

I did not see a topic for suggesting improvements, so I thought I would start one.

I only have one suggestion at this time and I have emailed MS numerous times about it.  It would be nice if when adding stocks to a list, you could take them off another list, rather than having to go into that list.  Add to a list should be as it is on Investors.com, where you check one box and uncheck another.

Let me count the ways...

Re: Suggestions for improving MarketSmith...

i don't know... personally I could add the sub title: Let me count the ways. in many ways marketsmith is a great tool, but it definitely is a work in progress.

I noticed that IBD already has the feature you mention, when you use the plus button for a ticker to add it to a list. it puts a check box by the list that the ticker is in.  So for me, just listing what lists a stock is in would be helpful. Maybe they could add a checkbox or something like that.  It would be nice to able to check or uncheck a whole list of lists.

assuming that some things are easier than others, I would like to see the news for IBD go back to the original setup where I could view them right in the app.  especially on the ipad, this was a real slick interface. no new windows to load, just read the article.  the ipad now matches the silverlight client and that sucks, especially if your working on a 3g connection.

I would like to see some kind of custom fields or flags.  Just having the one being flagged or not flagged seems rather limiting.

It would be nice to be able to sort by IBD's sector rank.

It would be nice to see how far a stock is off the all time high or all time low, or to be able to filter or sort on that.

hopefully the mac and the ipad version will be the same version with the new version of OS X coming soon, so that we mac people don't have to rely on silverlight. I would say this is one of the biggest priorities in my book.

I've noticed the new journal search feature which lets you create a list of stocks based on your journal search.  this seems like a great idea, but I could see the same thing for ibd news articles.  If your reading an article, in the small window, then being able to flick through all the stocks mentioned in that one article would be great.

....

I guess it depends on how versatile of tool marketsmith is truly meant to be and/or what your definition of improving really is. If your just following can-slim, then most of the choice make sense, but if you start to stray off that path, then it starts to become a bit constraining.

I wish that there was at least one more flag. I use the one flag to indicate New America stocks. As a result, I never use the flag for anything else.

I'd like to see an extra freeform text field to use in addition to the flags, too. Being able to search and sort on it would open a lot of possibilities for organization.

@johnprtl: Thanks for the feedback. You can use the journal feature in the Notes & Discussions tab to associate searchable text with a particular chart. Click here for more details: http://www.marketsmith.com/Learn/Topic.aspx?name=Using+Notes+%26+Discussions&type=2

the more I use the silverlight version on my mac the more I hate it.

I really appreciate the data, the layout of the charts, and all that good stuff, but this app sucks.

did you know that while the space bar goes to the next chart in a list, it also brings up the journal search box? why can't there be a consistant key, like maybe..... the page up/down, who would of thought of that, to move to the next / previous chart regardless of the focus.

it's almost like nobody at marketsmith or investors.com actually uses a mac with the software. the marketing people use them to pictures for the adverts, but that is it.

my guess is that this isn't a programmer or even a tool choice problem, but rather a management problem... it gets back to those 10 secrets of success.

@spartian8k9: We are unable to reproduce the issue you are encountering. If you click on a stock in a list and use the spacebar, it should advance through the stocks in the list without affecting other areas of the tool. However if you begin working in other areas of the tool, you must click back on the list again to continue using the spacebar to advance through the list.

If this is not how your list is functioning, please contact us so we can troubleshoot the issue directly. Call 1800-472-7479 or email us at reachus@marketsmith.com

no, you got it. I'm working on both the journal and list functions at the same time and it isn't good.

the question is why do I have to do that click? that click takes quite a bit of movement and dexterity. why can't there just be a standard key combo to move the focus and go to the next chart and another to move the focus and just restart the play mode. why does the space key have two completely different functions?

personally, the only thing I miss from the windows world, was simplicity of the alt key combos to run the menus and various dialog boxes. you could basically do almost everything without a mouse. the best part of MS Excel is using it without a mouse. I don't use it much any more, but even on a mac, excel retains much of the selection and motion key combos.

@Spartian8k9: Thanks for the clarification. We understand your concern. Unfortunately, the browser’s own hot keys sometimes compete with ours. If you have recently clicked a button, it will continue to be in a selected state until you click something else like the list or chart area. Then you can resume space barring through the list. We will look into whether a backup hot key without a  browser conflict could also be implemented for the list scroll functionality.

another thought is why doesn't the standard select all keyboard shortcut work in lists?

i find that would like to more easily reorder the list to have a new default sort and I have to click on the first and last element of a list which is a clumsy process. in every other app, you just use command-a or control-a.

next, why can't custom layouts include a default sort order?

why don't screens have default layouts / sort orders? maybe they get them by osmosis, but it would be more clear to select it up front.

The hotkey for “Select All” in a list is Ctrl+Shift+Down Key (PC) or Shift+Fn+Down Key (Mac). We will take your other suggestions into consideration. Thank you.

This is a question for the MS development team. We have gone several months without any enhancements to Marktetsmith itself. About the year ago upgrades to the program seemed to switch to Pattern Recognition (a revenue product for MS). SInce then there has been one upgrade to PR. Once that upgrade was completed (double bottoms etc), it seemed to me that you focused primarily on smart phone and ipad applications. So I ask if you have any manpower budgeted in the near future to work on MasterSmith, the base of all offspring products. This base has not changed much in well over a year.

Can you please list and give details on any enhancements you have planned for MS in the next few months.

Thank you,

Steve

I would like to see the today's current volume % change and price % change displayed on the chart (like the iPad app or Leaderboard)) without having to use the Track Price feature.

I would also like to be able to click a button to advance to the next chart instead of hitting the spacebar.  I find it is more comfortable to be able to "click" through the charts rather than tapping the spacebar constantly.

A suggestions that would really be helpful: Ability to screen for Change from open.  A stock may be down, but say has staged a huge reversal and is actually up for the day from its open print. This is a stock we would want to be able to see.

I keep a separate trading journal outside of MarketSmith and one of the things I keep in that journal are notes on my portfolio as a whole and notes on the general market.  I think it would be very helpful if you could have journal entries for folders and/or lists in MarketSmith.  That way, we can write notes on a "current portfolio" list, notes on the general market instead of individual notes within the Nasdaq, S&P 500, etc... , notes on a list of "IBD 50" from week to week...

Additionally, as someone who commutes about an hour to work on the train, it would be very helpful to have my journal available to me on the iPad.

Thanks,

Mike

Are there any plans for replacing the Silverlight UI with a Javascript version? Responsiveness and usability are leaving a lot to be desired, especially on Mac OS X. The current platform is severely limiting the potential of MarketSmith.

Additional Suggestions:

Saving current Markup tool selections (color and line width). Upon exit and re-entry to MarketSmith the selections revert back to the defaults.

Replacing the Default Column Layout [ for New Lists ] with a Customized Column Layout. And, since editing and overwriting an existing Customized Column Layout is not possible (a new one has to be saved); Deleting Customized Column Layouts.

Screening for Stocks: % increase in Current Week's Volume .vs. Prior Week's Volume. AND, % increase in Current Week's Price $ Chg .vs. Prior Week's Price $ Chg.  Plus for Popular indices, % increase in Volume .vs. Prior Day's Volume.

I posted this suggestion in the Technical forum area but no one saw it.

I like your pattern recognition feature. But I have a recommendation for a small improvement.  In the box that appears for the Breakout Day, could you add the Date of the Breakout just below the title and above the Price?  Currently you have to identify the price movement bar associated with the Breakout, then use the price track feature to hover over the identified bar to get the date. It would be much easier to just display the date with the other breakout data.

Thanks!
Gary

Not all results from screens I run are stocks I would consider investing in.  As suggested in your April webinar Optimize Your Analysis w/ Custom Checklists, I use a “passing grade” on checklists to further refine my watch list.  I would find it helpful to sort screen results by the grade stocks get on my checklist.

For instance, if I could add a column in the List Contents box showing results from my active checklist and sort that column as I would any other.

THANK YOU for the fantastic job you guys do every day,

Jim Duggan

Suggestions - % change in daily volume
by paul.townsend (20) Joined on 05/20/2013 Posts: 1

I'm a long time IBD subscriber as well as Leaderboard, but am relatively new to Marketsmith.

May I suggest that the daily % change in volume be added to the screen - probably up in the corner by the price/change/volume. I was a little surprised that this critical data is not displayed by default - rather it is accessed by scrolling the mouse over the daily stock bar on the chart.

Since the % change in volume is on literally every other IBD-related chart I've ever used, I'm confident that this suggestion would be a cinch to implement.

It's a small suggestion but one that I'm confident every Marketsmith user would applaud.

Thanks.

IBD has reported many times about the rise of Android. Can we please have Android tablet versions of eIBD and MarketSmith? I use my Google Nexus 10 every day to visit the IBD website, but can't use MS when I'm on the go.

Google reported that 55% of all devices that access the Play Store as of May 1, are running Android 4.0.3 or higher. Tablets should be near 100%. That can be the minimum requirement to use the apps, reducing development costs. Many high polish apps are adding this requirement and work great.

Here's my wish list:

  • Drag a line on the chart and see the percent change show up in a context popup, this would almost eliminate my calculator from my technical analysis.
  • Line markup snaps to RS line and S&P line as well as price/volume
  • Text boxes are WYSIWYG when printed
  • Filter on pattern detector parameters (I'd even pay extra for this)
  • Android support, my Galaxy Note 2 is extremely jealous.

Cheers,

Mike

I am also a Leaderboard/MarketSmith hybrid user.  I'm trying to keep a "Leaderboard Leader" Watchlist on Marketsmith, so it would sure me nice it there was a one step process for migrating the "Stocks approaching buy points" instead a one by one two step process of 1. Viewing an enlarged leaderboard chart; 2. then viewing in Marketsmith (sometimes); 3 then inserting in my Leaderboard Watch list; 4 Then deleting stocks that have fallen off the Leaderboar "approaching...."  The same would go for the  Cut List.  Whadiyathink guys??

Hi

There is no information about the open on the price bars, only the high, low and close.
Is there a way that I can enable this in Marketsmith that I have missed?
If not, could you please add such an option.

This information is important to many in technical analysis, so it would be nice have this on the charts.

I would really like it if the alerts could come in SMS message form, rather than email.

I will like to see %age calculation tool added to charts so we can click on 2 points and see how much % change in price has happened from point A to point B.

Is there a more detailed Company Information block available on Marketsmith?  Reading the one-line description as you page through a group of charts often does not give very much info about the company's sales mix/business lines/profit sources/geographical mix etc.  Other software gives a more detailed information block for each company, but maybe that is available somewhere on Marketsmith and I am missing it?
