Suggestions for improving MarketSmith
by bigdogcole (520) Joined on 06/17/2010 Posts: 20

I did not see a topic for suggesting improvements, so I thought I would start one.

I only have one suggestion at this time and I have emailed MS numerous times about it.  It would be nice if when adding stocks to a list, you could take them off another list, rather than having to go into that list.  Add to a list should be as it is on Investors.com, where you check one box and uncheck another.

I wish that there was at least one more flag. I use the one flag to indicate New America stocks. As a result, I never use the flag for anything else.

i Would like to see some of the features on the website become available on the mobile platforms, iphone/ipad. I have been waiting it seems like for months for mobile improvements.

I'd like to see an extra freeform text field to use in addition to the flags, too. Being able to search and sort on it would open a lot of possibilities for organization.

@johnprtl: Thanks for the feedback. You can use the journal feature in the Notes & Discussions tab to associate searchable text with a particular chart. Click here for more details: http://www.marketsmith.com/Learn/Topic.aspx?name=Using+Notes+%26+Discussions&type=2

@spartian8k9: We are unable to reproduce the issue you are encountering. If you click on a stock in a list and use the spacebar, it should advance through the stocks in the list without affecting other areas of the tool. However if you begin working in other areas of the tool, you must click back on the list again to continue using the spacebar to advance through the list.

If this is not how your list is functioning, please contact us so we can troubleshoot the issue directly. Call 1800-472-7479 or email us at reachus@marketsmith.com

@Spartian8k9: Thanks for the clarification. We understand your concern. Unfortunately, the browser’s own hot keys sometimes compete with ours. If you have recently clicked a button, it will continue to be in a selected state until you click something else like the list or chart area. Then you can resume space barring through the list. We will look into whether a backup hot key without a  browser conflict could also be implemented for the list scroll functionality.

The hotkey for “Select All” in a list is Ctrl+Shift+Down Key (PC) or Shift+Fn+Down Key (Mac). We will take your other suggestions into consideration. Thank you.

It would be great to have "screens" automatically downloaded to excel and sent to my e-mail (as requested).  I wish I could setup automatic e-mail downloads of screens on a nightly basis.

This is a question for the MS development team. We have gone several months without any enhancements to Marktetsmith itself. About the year ago upgrades to the program seemed to switch to Pattern Recognition (a revenue product for MS). SInce then there has been one upgrade to PR. Once that upgrade was completed (double bottoms etc), it seemed to me that you focused primarily on smart phone and ipad applications. So I ask if you have any manpower budgeted in the near future to work on MasterSmith, the base of all offspring products. This base has not changed much in well over a year.

Can you please list and give details on any enhancements you have planned for MS in the next few months.

Thank you,

Steve

I would like to see the today's current volume % change and price % change displayed on the chart (like the iPad app or Leaderboard)) without having to use the Track Price feature.

I would also like to be able to click a button to advance to the next chart instead of hitting the spacebar.  I find it is more comfortable to be able to "click" through the charts rather than tapping the spacebar constantly.

A suggestions that would really be helpful: Ability to screen for Change from open.  A stock may be down, but say has staged a huge reversal and is actually up for the day from its open print. This is a stock we would want to be able to see.

I keep a separate trading journal outside of MarketSmith and one of the things I keep in that journal are notes on my portfolio as a whole and notes on the general market.  I think it would be very helpful if you could have journal entries for folders and/or lists in MarketSmith.  That way, we can write notes on a "current portfolio" list, notes on the general market instead of individual notes within the Nasdaq, S&P 500, etc... , notes on a list of "IBD 50" from week to week...

Additionally, as someone who commutes about an hour to work on the train, it would be very helpful to have my journal available to me on the iPad.

Thanks,

Mike

Are there any plans for replacing the Silverlight UI with a Javascript version? Responsiveness and usability are leaving a lot to be desired, especially on Mac OS X. The current platform is severely limiting the potential of MarketSmith.

In the Pattern Recognition We need 2 additional points. 1. exit according to the Exit strategies. 2. Exit because of the 8% loss.

Thanks

To piggy back on a previous comment, Android is the dominant platform. I am disappointed I cannot use Marketsmith on my Samsung Galaxy phone or Nexus 7 netbook.

Additional Suggestions:

Saving current Markup tool selections (color and line width). Upon exit and re-entry to MarketSmith the selections revert back to the defaults.

Replacing the Default Column Layout [ for New Lists ] with a Customized Column Layout. And, since editing and overwriting an existing Customized Column Layout is not possible (a new one has to be saved); Deleting Customized Column Layouts.

Screening for Stocks: % increase in Current Week's Volume .vs. Prior Week's Volume. AND, % increase in Current Week's Price $ Chg .vs. Prior Week's Price $ Chg.  Plus for Popular indices, % increase in Volume .vs. Prior Day's Volume.

When I go through my list of stocks... say 250 growth... it would be nice to know which number I'm on .. like either 24th stock out of 250 or 210th stock out of 250... etc... Thanks for your time and efforts... Love your product...

I was thinking of that too but instead maybe have 3 different symbols, a flag, star and a plus sign to highlight different lists...Greg

I posted this suggestion in the Technical forum area but no one saw it.

I like your pattern recognition feature. But I have a recommendation for a small improvement.  In the box that appears for the Breakout Day, could you add the Date of the Breakout just below the title and above the Price?  Currently you have to identify the price movement bar associated with the Breakout, then use the price track feature to hover over the identified bar to get the date. It would be much easier to just display the date with the other breakout data.

Thanks!
Gary

Not all results from screens I run are stocks I would consider investing in.  As suggested in your April webinar Optimize Your Analysis w/ Custom Checklists, I use a “passing grade” on checklists to further refine my watch list.  I would find it helpful to sort screen results by the grade stocks get on my checklist.

For instance, if I could add a column in the List Contents box showing results from my active checklist and sort that column as I would any other.

THANK YOU for the fantastic job you guys do every day,

Jim Duggan

Adding the "markup tool" to the iOS apps (especially iPad) would be killer.
