Silverlight install issue
by johnlayton (40) Joined on 05/13/2010 Posts: 2

Is there an old post on Silverlight install issues?

Keep getting the "install microsoft silverlight" button showing up on the first page. Have successfully installed Silverlight, but button still shows up. Have de-installed Silverlight then re-installed it. Still the same button. Must be something getting in the way. Need some ideas to try.

John which browser are you using?  I had problems with Chrome and I had to go into tools and allow popups for marketsmith.com.

Ron, haven't been back here in a while. Have been using regular online dailygraphs. Am using IE8, XP Prof SP3. Have verified that popups are permitted for MarketSmith. Have de-installed and re-installed Silverlight several times but still can't get the orange go button. Still wants me to download Silverlight - which is already there. I went to the check settings on the home page and all categories come up with a green ok checkmark. Gotta be some setting somewhere. Maybe tech support will read this too.

Thanks, John

@johnlayton: We're sorry to hear that you have encountered trouble accessing the MarketSmith Tool.  Since you have tried un-installing and reinstalling Silverlight several times to no avail, it is possible that your computer is missing a necessary update or another issue is at hand.  To this end, we would like to suggest running a Windows Update after you un-install the Silverlight plugin from the Control Panel > All programs area on your computer.  Once the plugin has been removed from All programs, please open one Internet Explorer browser window and then access the "Tools" menu.  From the "Tools" menu, select "Windows Update" and install all critical files.  Once this has been completed, restart the computer and access www.marketsmith.com to install a fresh copy of Silverlight.

If you still have issues accessing the MarketSmith Tool after installing Windows Updates and a fresh copy of Silverlight, there could be another issue that we'll need to look into.  Please feel free to send us a Technical Support form by visiting http://www.marketsmith.com/ContactUs/Default.aspx and our team will be glad to troubleshoot the issue further.

Best Returns,

The MarketSmith Team

I have the exact same problem as Johnlayton described above. No launch button, message to install silverlight and upon installing a message that I already have it installed.  I see Marketsmiths response but why is the problem occuring.  I have not tried the fix yet because I am at work but how can a program such as marketsmith have such a glaring weakness that an the lack of a windows update will not allow access to the chart program. Come on MarketSmith, you guys need to fix this issue.  I purchased a brand new 17.3 inch laptop to be able see on the new pullup screens and now I have this problem!

Hi Mihnken,

We're sorry to hear that you're having trouble installing Silverlight.  Please check to see if you are using a 64 bit Internet Explorer browser.  Silverlight will not install properly when using the 64 bit browser.  The right Internet Explorer browser can be found using the following steps:

1)Click on the Start Menu

2) Click on All Programs

3) Select 'Internet Explorer' and not 'Internet Explorer (64 bit)

Also feel free to give us a call and we'd be happy to help you out.

Best Returns,

The MarketSmith Team

I have the same problem (IE 8 not recognizing that Silverlight is installed) ever since I reimaged my machine with the image I made in July, 2010. I currently use Silverlight (version 3 from) with Firefox, but when I try to export reports, it sometimes exports empty files - and it gives me other problems such as the "Save As" dialog coming up several times in a row (the more reports I have downloaded during this instance of Marketsmith, the more dialog boxes that some up in succession - it starts with one, then 3, then 5...).

I could use silverlight w/ IE8 before I reimaged my machine, so I don't really know what happened.

I'm using IE 8.0.6 on XP SP3.

I don't really have other problems on my machine, which is 5 years old (i.e. 32-bit).

I tried installing the latest version of silverlight off Microsoft's site (Version 4.xx), but that didn't change anything, so I reinstalled version 3 off your site.

I have updated the o/s with all critical updates.

Any Suggestions?

@tradetotravel: We’re sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulty with the installation of Silverlight. Silverlight Version 3.0 is the correct version to be using. I know you’ve mentioned that you’ve reinstalled it several times now but I want to ensure that a fresh copy of Silverlight is installed since it works for you on Firefox, but not on Internet Explorer. Please completely uninstall any versions of Silverlight already installed with the following steps. Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Click on Microsoft Silverlight in your list of programs > Select Change/Remove > Follow the onscreen instructions to remove the program. After uninstalling Silverlight, be sure to restart your computer. When your computer boots back up, go back to www.marketsmith.com through Internet Explorer. Go ahead and re-install Silverlight 3.0 by following the onscreen instructions after clicking on the “Install Silverlight” message on the right side of the screen. Once this has been installed, refresh your webpage and you should see “Launch Tool.”

If this does not resolve the issue, please send us a Technical Support form by visiting http://www.marketsmith.com/ContactUs/Default.aspx and our team will be glad to further troubleshoot the issue.

The Export issue you mentioned is a separate, unrelated issue from the installation of Silverlight. Our programmers have resolved this issue and it will be fixed after our next production release, early next week.

I solved the problem after noticing that FreeStockCharts.com, which also uses Silverlight, doesn't recognize the plug-in(or add-on - I'm not sure what the difference is). The Silverlight add-on was disabled within IE (Internet Explorer). To enable it, run Internet Explorer, select the Tools drop-down menu, then Select "Toolbars and Extensions", then select "Microsoft Silverlight" and press the "Enable" button at the bottom. You may need to restart the web browser.

I believe that I must have disabled it months ago when I made the backup image, so when I restored the image, I had no idea that I disabled Silverlight.
