Short Stroke Pattern
by richierich996 (730) Joined on 03/24/2010 Posts: 43

IBD has been referencing a new chart pattern - the short stroke (I'm not kidding)! I haven't been able to find it in any of WJO's books, but it looks like just SXCI broke out of one. Can anyone give me a good definition?

Short Stroke is not a new pattern.  Square Box is the new pattern, which has always been there, just recently measured and verified.  Check out Mike Webster's presentation at Chart School if you have attended this.  AskIBD.com also has the answer.  It is a rare occurrence that shows on a weekly chart as a short blue price bar following a long blue price bar of a breakout the week prior.  Short Stroke is only one week long.  SXCI showed us a short stroke the week ending 3/12/2010

Perhaps the best example of the short stroke pattern is RIMM. Take a look at the weeks of 5/11/07 and 5/18/07. Big price move (10%) on the first week in big volume. Then, the second week, the stock corrects sideways with a major decrease in volume. Buy point is .10 above the high from the first week. In RIMM's case the buy point is 51.87. From the breakout of that the subsequent week, one enjoys a 250% gain in six months!!! A powerful, but rare pattern....like the high tight flag...anyone see any high tight flags out there these days???

APKT is looking like it could break out of a High-Tight Flag as soon as the market turns.

HI, If you go to IBD in the "education" section and type in the search box what you're looking for, (in this case "Short Stroke") it will bring up any information that they have posted. I too was looking for this about 3 months back and found some good descriptions. Hope this helps.
